Projects : The Tara Mandala Seniors Home, in Kalimpong

OFT truly understands the necessity of building a home for senior Tibetans in the Kalimpong area. Here the aging population of people who escaped from Tibet in the 1950’s is made up of many senior citizens who have medical as well as financial problems. It is essential that they have a home that is a warm, solid shelter with medical facilities nearby, such as the Tibetan Medical Clinic providing traditional Tibetan Medicine, a Health Department Clinic providing Western Allopathic Medicine, and a local clinic that specializes in heart disease. As for the social component, directly beside the proposed building site stands the Tibetan community hall, where a multitude of events and ceremonies take place. A short two minute stroll to the north leads to the Kalimpong Bazaar Street.

The Tara Mandala Home will include: kitchen, dining hall, infirmary, nurses room & dispensary, reading room, visitors room, lounge, foyer with seating, washing && drying room, staff living quarter, Buddhist prayer room and Community room for all residents.

Mr. Tsewang Tashi Karleg, the Tibetan Welfare Officer for Kalimpong, stated in a letter that the Tara Mandala home will be of great benefit to aged Tibetans like Mrs. Bhomsto. Mrs Bhomsto, who is 82 years old, was born at Trehor, Kham, in Tibet in 1922. During the Chinese aggression in Tibet, she left her native town and arrived in Lhasa in 1957. After the Chinese occupation of Tibet in 1959, she came to India via Narthola and settled in Kalimpong. She married her husband Mr Sherab in Kalimpong. They earned their livelihood by conducting a small business selling momo and thugpa (Tibetan dumplings and noodle soup). In 1984, when she was 62, she lost her husband. A few years ago, due to weakness and poor health, she slipped and fell, fracturing her leg. The Department of Health, Dharamsala, very kindly helped with her treatment. Physically Mrs. Bhomsto is very weak and her vision is poor. She lives alone and has no living relatives to look after her.
